The two questions seek to capture:
Q1. WHAT CAN YOU DO?
i.e. what are your skills and day-to-day actions?
What do YOU think you’re good at or valued for? It’s an open question, an invite for people to reflect on their actions, tasks, roles & qualities, however visible or not.
Q2. WHAT HAVE YOU ALWAYS THOUGHT ABOUT DOING?
i.e. What have you always hoped to try? What have you longed to find out? What might you be good at? It’s an open question, to invite people to share their curiosities, aspirations & interests.
The 2 questions are taken from the work of artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles. As artist in residence at NYC’s Department of Sanitation, Ukeles elevated acts of care & maintenance into art, giving value to process & production. At the 23PRESS we place as much value on the process of building the Small Press, as we do on the creative work it produces.
